About the Gonzalez Reynoso Family

The story of Northgate González Markets is the story of a family of immigrants that has fulfilled the American dream through vision, hard work and faith.

Miguel Gonzalez Sr. and his wife Teresa Reynoso de Gonzalez lived in a small town called Jalostotitlan in the state of Jalisco in Mexico. He was a shoemaker and she was a housewife. He had a small shop in the middle of the town and with this he supported his wife and thirteen children. In 1952, Miguel Sr.’s shoe store, La Elegancia, burnt down. A local priest collected donations for the family of fifteen. Miguel Sr., quickly realized he would have to move to the United States in order to keep supporting his large family financially. After struggling for 14 years to get reestablished, at 44 years of age, Miguel and his older sons immigrated to Los Angeles, leaving behind his wife and other children.

Miguel Sr. along with his older sons moved to the United States, leaving behind Teresa and the younger children. In 1975, the rest of the family was able to move to the United States where they lived in La Mirada, California.

On January 2nd of 1980, the first Northgate opened off of Anaheim Boulevard in Anaheim. With the opening of that first store, the “gates of the North” opened up to the Gonzalez Reynoso family. All the family worked there. They did everything from cutting meat and stocking grocery aisles, to maintenance and checking out customers. They would work long hours and some even had another job. The word got out that there was a new store in town that was run by Hispanics and that they sold Hispanic products, as well as would cash their checks. The popularity of Northgate grew because of their customer service and the availability of products that reminded their customers of their hometown. All of this plus customers did not have to worry about not understanding the language at more mainstream supermarkets. They also had a secret recipe for prepared carne asada, chorizo and their famous carnitas.

The dream of the Gonzalez family began to flourish. They had to hire more employees, install more cash registers and eventually in 1986, they opened their second store in La Habra. Three years later they opened in Pico Rivera and the dream of Miguel Jr was becoming reality. His dream was for all of his thirteen brothers and sisters to have their own store.

Today this is a reality and thirty two years later, many second generation family members work at Northgate while the rest continue their education.

The Gonzalez Reynoso family has never forgotten their roots and they continue to give back the community that has allowed them to keep their dream growing. In April of 2000 the Gonzalez Reynoso family founded the “Familia Gonzalez Reynoso Foundation” to give back to the communities they have served for over 32 years.

Newer Northgate Gonzalez Markets are about 50,000 square feet in size, allowing us to offer shoppers a large service meat department, bakery, tortilleria, and prepared foods, in addition to a sizable section of domestic and imported Latin American grocery goods.

What started off as a small store on Anaheim Boulevard now extends into three counties: Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego.

González Reynoso Family Foundation History

The González tradition and commitment of giving back to our community started long before the official beginning of the González Reynoso Family Foundation.

The values and goodwill instilled by Don Miguel González and Doña Teresa Reynoso de González were well established and have carried on to the present day Foundation. Don Miguel believed that in order to prosper, he must also give back to the community that had provided him with his successful business.

He began this commitment to the community by providing donations to local sports teams, community events and neighborhood schools. Today, this goodwill and passion to help others continues to live through the González Reynoso Family Foundation.
