More than 25 million Americans are struggling with diabetes. Chances are good that you, someone in your family or someone you know is impacted. But there is good news. With awareness, proper diet, exercise and sometimes medication, diabetes can be controlled. Northgate is here to help.

November is National Diabetes Month. It’s a good time to learn a bit more about this problem.

Let’s start with the basics. Diabetes is not one, but a group of metabolic diseases. The common factor in all is too much sugar in the blood. There can be several causes for this condition, each of which defines a separate disease.

In Type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce sufficient insulin, a hormone necessary to convert blood sugar into energy. In this situation, medication is almost always required. Type 2 diabetes is a result of insulin resistance and is a much more common problem. In Type 2 diabetes, there is too much sugar in the blood, which can cause numerous health problems including cardiovascular disease, kidney damage and blindness. There are other types of diabetes, including gestational diabetes, which impacts pregnant women and which generally resolves after childbirth.

All of these conditions are serious and each requires vigilance and medical monitoring. One of the most important management tools available in controlling diabetes is diet.

If you are diabetic or know someone who is, there are general guidelines that will be helpful:

  • Choose foods that are high in dietary fiber and low in saturated fat. Whole grains and fiber help the body process sugars more slowly.
  • Eat lean meats and try vegetable proteins like beans and tofu. Eat a balanced diet with a colorful selection of vegetables, fruits and whole grains.
  • Eat regular meals and try to eat those meals at about the same time each day, with the same amount of carbohydrates.
  • Avoid simple carbohydrates such as fruit drinks, sugary drinks, and candy. The sugars in these foods will be absorbed quickly.
  • Pay attention to the amount of carbohydrate in each serving. Too much of a “good” diabetic food--or any food for that matter, is not a smart choice.

Northgate is here to help. Throughout our stores you will find informative shelf tags that guide you to smart food choices. While shopping, look for items that are labeled “whole grain” and “good source of fiber” to make better carbohydrate choices. Remember, all carbohydrates count!

At meal times, follow the American Diabetes Association’s recommendations for serving diabetic-friendly plates (more detail on this in the next blog post).

Diabetes is a manageable health condition. With proper diet, exercise, weight and blood pressure management, and sometimes medication, this disease does not have to limit an active lifestyle.

I agree with your opinion on low catrbhydoare diets for diabetics, but I would take it one step farther and eliminate all gluten in the diet as well. Avoid wheat, barley and only eat bread made with potato or rice flour. Cornbread is acceptable too.
