March is National Nutrition Month!
Viva La Salud® by Northgate Markets is proud to celebrate National Nutrition Month®! This year, we want to encourage our customers to “Bite into a healthy lifestyle.” Two key components of a healthy lifestyle are making smarter food choices and being physically active.
Making smarter food choices

Eating smarter doesn’t have to mean eating less. The idea is to choose foods that are lower in calories and higher in nutrients like vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants. Eating fewer calories throughout the day can help you manage your weight and the vitamins and minerals can help your body run more efficiently and possibly keep illness away. Here’s how shopping at Northgate can help you reach your healthy eating goals.

  • Including fruits and vegetables in your meals and snacks can help you keep calories on the lower end while boosting the nutrient content. Visit our Rancho Gonzalez produce department for a wide variety of the highest quality of fruits and vegetables – everything from huasontle to kale.
  • Choosing lean protein (protein with little to no amount of saturated fat or cholesterol) also helps reduce calories while nourishing your body. In our Meat Department you will find boneless, skinless chicken breasts, a variety of fish as well as lean ground meat. Lean protein can also be obtained from beans, nuts and seeds. Stroll through our grocery aisles to find chia seeds for your smoothie or almonds to pack as a snack.
  • Making half of your grains whole grains can help you get fiber and other nutrients while keeping you energized.  At Northgate, we have many whole grain options including whole wheat bread, whole grain cereal, brown rice and quinoa.   Don’t know how to cook brown rice?  Here’s a delicious and easy recipe for Brown Rice with Lemon and Cilantro.

  • Switching to 1% or non-fat milk can also help reduce calories and help manage high cholesterol. If you have trouble digesting lactose, we also carry lactose-free milk as well as soy and almond milk. Stop in and check out our selection.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Exercising doesn’t have to mean going to the gym. It can be anything you enjoy doing, like gardening, dancing or taking a walk around the block. If you have trouble sticking to a plan to be physically active, find a friend to help motivate you. For more ideas on getting a healthy exercise routine started, check out our “Get F.I.T.T.E.” posting.
