Fortunately, you can control many of the factors that influence heart health. Basic things you can do to promote a healthy heart include maintaining a healthy body weight and keeping your blood pressure and cholesterol readings within recommended ranges. These factors are all manageable by a heart healthy diet.

Since February is American Heart Health Awareness Month, there is no better time than the present to take a second look at what you’re putting in your shopping cart.

Foods rich in potassium, calcium, magnesium, whole grains, dietary fibers, good fats and omega-3 fatty acids promote heart health. These nutrients protect the heart and blood vessels, help lower blood pressure, reduce triglycerides and bad cholesterol and can promote production of good cholesterol.

What foods are we talking about?

Seafood, a variety of fruits and vegetables, beans, low-fat dairy products, whole grains, and foods low in sodium and saturated fat can all promote heart health.

Eat fish at least 2 times per week.

Salmon, sardines and albacore tuna packed in water are all rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help reduce bad cholesterol.

Fruits and vegetables contain fiber, vitamins, minerals and other substances that contribute towards heart health.

Carrots, spinach, broccoli, sweet potatoes and asparagus all contain minerals and vitamins that help lower blood pressure, an important risk factor for heart disease. As a general rule, fresh fruits and vegetables are best, but frozen or canned varieties are fine, so long as you avoid products that include added sugars or sodium or rinse before use.

Nuts are a great and convenient addition to a heart-healthy diet.

Almonds, cashews, walnuts and other nuts contain good fats. Have them as a snack or sprinkle them into your oatmeal, cereal, yogurt or salad. Just be sure to use in moderate amounts (only a handful at a time) because they are also rich in calories.
