Happy 2015! Time To Get FITTE!
With the holiday season in the rear view mirror, it’s time to turn your attention to getting 2015 off to a fresh start, and Viva La Salud is here to help propel you to a commitment of new health-smart routines in the New Year.

The National Academy of Sports Medicine helps spell it out with “F.I.T.T.E” -- principles that can apply to any exercise of your choice:

  • Frequency – Refers to the number of activities or training sessions in any given time frame (typically a week). Ideally, you’ll want to get moving 5-7 days per week.

  • Intensity – Refers to the level of demand the activity places on the body. Moderate intensity is preferred, enough to raise heart and respiration rates, but not cause exhaustion or breathlessness.

  • Time – Refers to how much time you engage in the activity. 30 minutes a day is recommended. For more improved fitness, the goal should be a full hour.

  • Type – Refers to the type of activity you choose to engage in. It’s your choice – the “type” can be literally anything, whether it’s walking, running, swimming, gardening, raking leaves, parking further from your destination for a longer walk, using stairs instead of elevators, etc. For improved fitness, try working out on a treadmill, stationery bike, stair-stepper or ARC trainer, sign up for an aerobics class, try a new sport, or start weight-training.

  • Enjoyment – Refers to amount of pleasure you receive from each activity – the greater the better! Enjoyment is key, because if you like what you are doing, you will continue to stick to it and see long-lasting results.

As always, a healthy diet is a key proponent of any new exercise plan. Eat “5-A-Day,” incorporating five daily servings of fruits and vegetables that are low in sodium and rich in antioxidants. Fruit and vegetables contain potassium, magnesium and fiber, all of which have been shown to keep your body in tip-top shape.
