GET CONTROL OF YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE THIS MONTH!
May is National High Blood Pressure Education Month, and it’s the perfect time to increase your awareness and understand how important it is to maintain a healthy blood pressure level. Many people aren’t aware that high blood pressure is preventable!

Start with a healthy diet and by exercising regularly with at least 2.5 hours of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week (i.e., brisk walking, running, etc.).

Try to incorporate at least five servings of fruit and vegetables every day, as they contain potassium, magnesium and fiber, all of which have been shown to help lower blood pressure.

Plenty of great tasting foods help lower your blood pressure too, including blueberries, strawberries, raspberries), bananas, baked potatoes, dark chocolate, and high-fiber cereals such as oatmeal, bran flakes, or shredded wheat.

If you want to keep your blood pressure in check, you should also limit your salt intake, manage stress, avoid smoking, and drink alcohol in moderation.

Lowering your sodium intake can be challenging. We make it easy to shop for low-sodium foods with our Viva La Salud ™ program that guides you with colorful shelf-edge tags highlighting foods that are “Low Sodium,” “Low Saturated Fat,” and “Heart Healthy.”

If a recipe calls for salt, you can use substitutes such as herbs, spices, lemon or lime juice, garlic, ginger, chili or balsamic or flavored vinegars. Additionally, wine, homemade stock or gravy, onion, shallots or spring onions will add lots of flavor.
