Celebrate Healthy Holidays in December!
Another holiday season is here, and Viva La Salud is here help with quick tips on how to stay healthy during this busy time. The end of the year is a great time to count your blessings and plan for another year of health!
  • Start by making sure you keep your immune system in tip-top shape by practicing immune building tactics such as getting enough sleep (7 to 9 hours), getting plenty of exercise, washing hands up to the elbow frequently, loading up on fruits and vegetables, limiting sugar, and increasing vitamin D intake.

  • Next up? The dreaded holiday bulge. It’s a myth that most people put on 5-10 pounds during the holiday season. Truth is, the average adult gains just a pound between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, according to the New England Journal of Medicine. Unfortunately, most people never lose that extra pound, and over the years they add up.

  • Fight back at the holiday bulge by snacking lightly before holiday parties to curb your appetite. Fruits and vegetables will help satiate your appetite and provide a boost of antioxidants.

  • Use a smaller plate. This encourages you to use portion control.

  • Fill your plate with vegetables and salad before eating main entrees and sides, which will typically contain the most calories and fat.

  • Slow down and enjoy your meal. Before you go back for seconds, wait 10 minutes to see if you really are still hungry. If you are, treat yourself with dessert!

  • Load up on water, which will help keep you full and avoid overeating.

  • Use Viva La Salud and our nutrition shelf-edge labeling program to help you plan a healthy holiday season for you and your family. Look for colorful, easy to identify tags throughout our store highlighting foods that are “Whole Grain,” “Organic,” “Heart Healthy,” “Low Sodium,” and much more!

Happy holidays and best wishes for a healthy, prosperous 2015!
