2014 Cooking Up Change - Changing the Future of School Food
Because it is Healthy Back to School Month Viva la Salud would like to congratulate Santa Ana Valley High School on winning Cooking Up Change for three years in a row! Cooking up Change is a culinary competition that allows students to design their own school lunch menu. With limited ingredients and realistic constraints, these high school culinary students must create a delicious and nutritious school lunch for about $1 per meal!
Ten cities -350 student chefs- across the country participate in Cooking up Change contests: Chicago, Houston, Jacksonville, Little Rock, Los Angeles, Memphis, Orange County, Orlando, Wichita and Winston-Salem. The Orange County contest was hosted at our very own Northgate Markets corporate office in Anaheim!

Orange County’s winning student chefs are Santa Ana Valley High champions - Lily, Gustavo and Josue. They won with their meal of Kickin' Tacos, Zesta Fiesta Salad and Yummy Tummy Bananas! Their main dish was a fish taco with cabbage slaw. It was accompanied by a banana (infused with cinnamon and ginger) dipped in yogurt, then rolled with granola and frozen. They also served a corn and bean salad infused with cumin and lime. They are the 3rd team from Valley High to win the Cooking Up Change competition!
A Special Congratulations to:
  • Second Place & Best After School Snack:

    Western High School, Anaheim
Tiffany Boudreau, Jessica Cho, Debbie Mitchell

  • Third Place:

    Westminster High School
Gilberto Davila, Shae De la Pina, Nallely Vasquez

And All the Participating OC School Teams!
